Solar panels at the service of the company, but not only...

African Eagle has more than 80 solar panels currently. It produces 20 KwH, which makes it self-sufficient in energy. The excess power produced is redirected to the Eskom grid therefore helping the load shedding situation in South Africa. The panels were installed by African Eagle 5 years ago, with a total of 864 000 Kw produced since the installation.  This is a long term financial and environmental benefit. It is an eco-friendly approach.

Signal hill

Signal Hill overlooks the city of Cape Town. Its summit located at 350 meters of altitude allows us to have a global view on the city of Cape Town. Signal Hill is very famous for its sunsets. Hiking trails lead to the top of the hill, from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the Bay of Cape Town. Signal Hill is also used as a launch for paragliders.

Signal Hill owes its name to the establishment of a semaphore at the top of the hill: the flags that were hoisted were...

A full day E-Biking in the winelands of Stellenbosch

On a windy day in Cape Town I got up to get ready for my first electric bike tour ever. I had been told these were quite fun but for a strange reason I always thought it was something for lazy people. Though I thought I’d give it a try and I combined this first experience with a couple wine tastings in the wine region of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek as I love wine and mountains.

We arrived at Stellenbosch, South Africa’s second-oldest town while the weather changed to a...

Marine Eco Tour Skipper reactivity saves entangled whale

On a regular daily Marine Eco Tour excursion last Friday, March 29th, African Eagle boat skipper Francois Stapelberg came across a whale entangled in fishing rope, fishing gear and floatation buoys, 1.5 nautical miles off-shore of the Sea Point Pavilion.

PART 3 - Life Of Michael Baker

Living in Cape Town is truly a fantastic privelege. I am not sure that there are many places in the world where one can within half an hour’s drive literally be in another world.

One could be transported literally and figuratively form the hustle and bustle of the city with its incumbent sights and sounds to the serenity and natural beauty of the winelands regions of Stellenbosch, Franschoek and Paarl. As a local I am able to feel like a tourist and explore the various wine fa...

PART 2 - Life Of Michael Baker

Cape Town, my home for fifty years, some describe it as Europe in Africa. This might be true because at various stages in our history we were colonized by the Dutch and then the English. The French also rocked up on our shores as religious exiles.

So yes, the European influence is evident, and continues to be so. We are however a multicultural city created by the migration of people from the north east and west, slaves brought in by the Dutch, arrivals from Eu...

Saint Patrick's Day

Celebrated by the Irish from all over the world, from Dublin to New York, St. Patrick's Day is one of the most important festivals in Ireland. Before talking about the events planned in Cape Town, let’s trace the history of this festival and its origins.

Saint Patrick, known as the “Apostle of Ireland”, once explained the concept of the Holy Trinity to the Irish in a sermon at the Rock of Cashel using a clover. Therefore, this has become the symbol of Ireland (...

PART 1 - Life Of Michael Baker

My name is Michael Baker. I was born in District Six in the 60’s and have been living in Cape Town ever since. Having lived here all my life, I had come to take so much for granted. It is only when I started to work in the tourism industry that my appreciation for this truly amazing city was realized.

Living in the constant presence of Table Mountain, having fun at our amazing beaches and just being in the space that is Cape Town and its diverse communities almost numbed me to...
